OpenAI Acquires Chat.com Domain

OpenAI has acquired Chat.com, adding this prestigious domain to its roster of valuable web addresses.
As of today, visitors to Chat.com are redirected to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, its AI-powered chatbot. A representative from OpenAI confirmed the acquisition.
Originally registered in September 1996, Chat.com is one of the internet’s older domains. Reports last year indicated that Dharmesh Shah, co-founder and CTO of HubSpot, purchased Chat.com for $15.5 million, ranking it among the highest public domain sales.
In March, Shah disclosed he had sold Chat.com to an undisclosed buyer. Late today, he revealed in a post on X that OpenAI was the buyer, suggesting he may have received OpenAI shares as part of the deal.
While the domain now redirects to ChatGPT, it appears OpenAI hasn’t fully transitioned its brand to Chat.com, which may explain why the platform isn’t directly hosted there.
OpenAI has not disclosed the acquisition cost for Chat.com.
